Life is a constant series of ups and downs. One mantra that helps me accept and cope with these swings is this: “Enjoy when you can. Endure when you must.” .
I first heard this advice from long-time T-nation writer, Chris Shugart who shared this phrase sometime around 2007 or 2008 but it dates back to Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who left us quite a library of powerful quotes. We all go through phases, cycles, whatever you want to call them… and this simple phrase has helped me get through some tough times – and get more enjoyment from the good times. I talk a lot about awareness and how it creates choice. This is another example of how awareness can help us, in these instances by being aware of the wave of life we’re in/on – a cycle of enduring or enjoying. These can be micro, macro, meta… the key is to realize that none of them are permanent. Good or bad, they will pass. So if things are great, smile, soak it up and enjoy it. Recognize the blessing or fortune and express gratitude. Don’t take it for granted. If things suck, know it will pass and choose to see it as an opportunity to flex our fortitude and resilience. Oh, and a note on the word endure, the base of endurance… Endurance is defined as the ability to endure: Endure (verb) = to remain in existence, to last through possibly painful or difficult circumstances patiently; to persevere, to keep going. What other option do we have? To quit? I’m not taking that route. Are you? TUNE IN to BHP Shorts 044 for more. .

Most people pass time by default, meaning they’re not deliberate about the way they choose to spend their time. ⁣
⁣
Awareness of this is the first step in changing the habit/pattern. ⁣
⁣
If you struggle to break your habits, try this:⁣
⁣
Use friction to break your habit loops.⁣
⁣
Example: Maybe you’ve already removed Facebook, Twitter, or Gmail from your smart device…⁣
⁣
But are you still logged in on your computer or through your web browser?⁣
⁣
Don’t save your logins. Force yourself to login from scratch every time.⁣
⁣
Force yourself to be deliberate, not mindless.⁣
⁣
Designate intentional times during the day to check and don’t save your login!!⁣
⁣

On our recent travels, Donna and I encountered a Buddhist Monk who offered us some advice:⁣
⁣
“Work smoothly. Lifetime Peace.”⁣
⁣
In a world that increasingly makes us feel as though we need to scream, shout, push, hustle, and elbow our way into other’s attention, this token is a welcome reminder to focus on our own work, at our own pace.⁣
⁣
I don’t propose to have the solution to world peace or perpetual happiness for all, but something tells me the realization of those pursuits is not found in 100 hour work-weeks accompanied by overworked, over-stressed, and dis-eased lives that constantly seek the attention and approval of others.⁣
⁣
I’m not saying we should throw up our hands, and let the winds of fate blow us where they will.⁣
⁣
If you know me, you know that’s the opposite of my beliefs.⁣
⁣
So the answer my friends must lie somewhere in between.⁣ Control what we can control to the best of our abilities and then let go.⁣
⁣
Regardless of our spiritual preferences, there is a common theme here – seeking to find the balance between making things happen and accepting that which we cannot control.⁣
⁣
Don’t force it. Learn acceptance, pacing, patience.⁣
⁣
Appreciate, don’t expect⁣
⁣
Measure success by intrinsic factors, not extrinsic.⁣
⁣
Chase an ideal, a standard of excellence, an internal vision, not the approval of others.⁣
⁣
Remember that THERE is not better than here.⁣
⁣
Run your race. Focus on yourself and your stuff. Put on blinders if need be. Avoid toxic goals. (3 C’s, & if you missed that episode, it is linked in the show notes)⁣

Superheroes need other superheroes.
.
Contrary to our initial thoughts, this camaraderie is not about forming a super-alliance that fights crime together.
.
Rather, it’s a support group where humans can relate to other humans who face similar struggles – both internal and external. Like recognizes like. The artist recognizes the work and struggle experienced by another artist. The athlete or business owner understand the realities of their respective counterparts.
.
None of us can or does it alone.
.
We benefit greatly from spending time with those who understand the resistance we seek to overcome on a daily basis. I get it, hangouts for superheroes aren’t common as your corner Starbucks. If it doesn’t exist, create it.
.
💥 Start a weekly coffee meetup for the superheroes in your community.
💥 Make time to take of your cape & mask with another person who is fighting the same fight you are.
💥 Start a group text or DM with a squad of like-minded people who may not be in your geographical area.
.
Now, the disclaimer – this superhero hangout is not an opportunity to whine and wine. It’s about supporting and encouraging each other to continue to push the boundaries and walk that wire. It’s a safe haven to recharge and restore before going once into the frey of the good fight. No playing small. Step into your greatness.
.
Much love to all the superheroes I get to hang out with. You know who you are. 👊🏼🖤

Let's be honest, life can sometimes feel crazy, chaotic, even overwhelming.⁣
⁣
In today's BHP Short, I'm sharing 3 of my go-to strategies to center myself, protect my sanity and productivity:⁣
⁣
1️⃣ Reading Tao Te Ching⁣
⁣
In a world that constantly urges us to be and do more, sometimes, we need a reminder that we are enough. We (usually) possess the answers within ourselves, if we allow ourselves the time and space - free from distraction - to sit and let them bubble up to the surface, which is precisely why the next two strategies are so effective. ⁣

Ever watch kids or excited adults arrive at a pool?⁣
⁣
If you have, you might notice that people who want to swim in the deep end of the pool usually use the diving board.⁣
⁣
Wading in gives us an opportunity to turn back if we change our minds, you know, when things get uncomfortable.⁣
⁣
Cannonballs and gainers don’t provide the same escape clause.⁣
⁣
Once we decide and commit, there is no going back.⁣
⁣
The boats have been burned.⁣
⁣
When I owned my performance training facility, House Of Strength, I had countless potential members tell me they “needed to get in shape before they could workout here.”⁣
⁣
I say the same thing now that I told them every time: I’m calling BS on that one.⁣
⁣
First of all, great coaches know how to meet you where you and help you progress from there… but I digress.⁣
⁣
The lesson here isn’t about the coach/mentor.⁣
⁣
The lesson here is not to give ourselves an OUT before we begin.⁣
⁣
Adversity and challenge await us all.⁣
⁣
Don’t give yourself an easy out.⁣
⁣
People who know they want to swim in the deep end of the pool usually use the diving board.⁣
⁣
Do yourself a favor and commit fully to yourself and your pursuits.⁣
⁣
Burn the boats.⁣
